Questions to Consider for Your Story
Step #1 - What stories do you want to tell?
Please remember this is YOUR story, YOUR life of service to America. Tell us how you want your service to be remembered.
You may use these SUGGESTED topics to help develop your memories for your stories. Please add anything else you want to tell. If possible, include dates of significant events (arrival in-country, departure, key events, battles, etc.). You may be able to retrieve these dates later on from others, their stories, etc.
What were you doing prior to service? Did you enlist or did you get invited by UNCLE SAM?
What did you know or think about the war prior to going?
Does your family have a military history?
Did you get to choose anything about your service?
What was your leave like before you went to Vietnam ? Did you find your friends/family supportive, proud? Did they give you any words of wisdom?
What were your first impressions when you arrived in Vietnam? Describe how you felt those first few days. Who were some of first people you met?
Talk about typical days in the bush, on the fire base, in the rear.
Describe the food.
Describe any illnesses/injuries
Describe the nature and wildlife.
What scared you most?
What were the Vietnamese people and children like?
How did you feel when you got letters/packages from home? Did you get many?
Where did you go on R&R? What was that like?
What did you do in your down time?
Tell about your worst day there?
Tell about your best day?
Tell about special friends you made.
Please tell us anything that you’d like to about your year in Vietnam.
What was it like the day you left to come home? What was your homecoming like? How were you treated?
What were your feelings about the war after you were home? Did your opinions change ?
How has your life been since returning home? Has it been what you wanted it to be?
How did the war change you?
These are only suggestions to stimulate your thinking. We are expecting everyone to have multiple stories. It would be better to separate your submissions into shorter stories about individual events/topics with lots of detail and elaboration for each. For example, each question/topic above might provoke a separate story submission. Please submit one story at a time, as soon as you complete it. It's important for all of us to get this mission underway ASAP. You can revise your story at any time.
You may find it helpful to make notes about your story as you prepare. When you are ready to share your story, please contact me using the Email Me link at the top of this page.
We were all brothers in Vietnam. And once again, we're all in this together.
